Birgit has lived all over the world but feels most at home on the Pacific Northwest coast. She makes macrame sculptures to pay homage to the smart and friendly giant pacific octopus: Each one is unique, its personality emerging during the gradual, meditative knotting process.

She is also fascinated by the dizzying variety of beautiful rocks on the beaches here. Sometimes their shape, color, and texture evoke organic forms, and when that happens, she carves the rock to bring out the little spirit animal hiding inside. Birgit is inspired by various cultures that celebrate the magical power of animals, so her carvings sometimes evoke elements found in Japanese Netsuke, Zuni stone fetishes, and Mexican Alebrijes. She hopes that maybe one of her rocks will draw you in and invite you to touch it, thus adding another tiny chapter to its already unfathomably long history!
